June 25 la Serena

Well made it to the big town! After an uphill I calculated and I've climed 4000 meters so far more to come the bike just swallows the kilometers is grand!

I've stopped at a nice hotel along the beach nice surf spots

To after 4 days take a few nice warm showered and re supply as there is another long stretch ahead! With nothing.

And to rest my left knee it's hitting pretty badly! As is my left side of my neck oh where is a nurse when I need one:)

Bike maintenance -- none to be had just make sure all of the bolts are tight and that is it no chain to worry about and no dérailleur :)

So a good night and then back on the road for another week I'm thinking that is a win 5 or six days in the tent and then hotel!

The road from papudo to Los Vilos

What can be said long up hill with little signs that say the step hill of this the step hill of that! Great thanks we can see there's a hill no need to call it something and put a picture of a truck struggling too!
I dug deep and took my time determined to make it to Los Vilos!
Then as the sun was setting about 17:45 I was there I made my way down this road which was under construction and took the opportunity to take a few pictures of it, I found the yet un finished street lights to be rather a good subject.

Shortly there after I made my way closer to the ocean, to snap away the sunset never mind that it was getting dark I knew the tent by now and was confident in my organization or Gera to find the head light to set it up in the dark.

While I was snapping away there were two people a man and a woman in their fifties who like my bike and said ola! I asked them where would be a good place to camp perhaps the beach? They said the next town over about five km away I complained but okay why not?! They then offered for me to set up the tent in their yard! I said really that's awfully nice!

We took it from there! She made me dinner and we looked at the maps and discussed things, family friends what we liked who we were they have four children about my age living in various places such as Liverpool, France etc.

we continued to talk and drink wine, she a reporter and he a photographer, I asked where I could get a zoom lens for my camera and he told me of two places one a tax free area and the other not.

We then talked about the various important projects in Chile like the very large array of listening satellites in alma and the telescopes they asked if I would be interested in seeing them and I said of course! They will see if I can get in! More on that later but it would be a real treat! Not many people get to see them!

We said good night and I dreamed of the scope,s the amazing sights they would give, we had breakfast and then I was off. I could not thank them enough for their hospitality!

The road to Serena

June 22 2014
Nothing to report except that it was one of the worst nights I had in a very long time sleeping only a couple of feet from the panam route 5 auto pista, it felt like I was sleeping under pasting trucks not fun at all. There was no other choice.

The road to Serena continued

June 23 2014

No mans land! Literally nothing for hundreds of kilometers save for a few desolate houses here and there and the ever present dogs! Chasing you even on the auto pista!!! Dam them!!

The road was more of the same some nasty uphills but also some pretty fun downhills my cycle computer said I had reached 67 kph and Mach1 of 700 kph as the manual said the accuracy is slightly less! ;)

Anything above 60 with all that gear attached to the bike is pretty scary things are unstable and breaks well they don't stop anything at theses speeds! Concentrated downhills to avoid glass or just a bad move and Blam! It would be nasty to fall.

My Chilean family had told me to look at where the truck stop for food as those would be the good places, but here on this stretch of road there was nothing at all.

Then out of the blue an oasis a small little cafeteria I pulled over as I was hungry and thirsty I had breakfeast and plenty of water but I wanted to stop for a bit not knowing when the next stop would be,  something like 100km perhaps.

I ordered two large sandwiches and a litter of coke, the soccer was on the tv chile vs the Netherlands in which chile lost 2-0 shame.

Filled up with water just in case and headed off.

Serena is still 100 km away and I want to start early to get there at about 2 pm and take a nice shower and refill on supplies.

Papudo

Never did I think that spending the night in that perfect spot near the water would include breakfast well almost...

After falling asleep to the sounds of distant dogs ( there everywhere! ) and the birds and horses eating peacefully on that soft sand ground would I be awakened by a man his dogs a friend and his shot gun!

He asked me some questions in english I explained and he was not too happy I was there but not so mad that he thought about drawing his weapon, I was to say the least worried!

I decided to skip breakfast this would be a mistake as the days trip was uphill. I packed up and left.

Looking starting across the street but the restaurant was shut, for a place to eat and on this little back country road there were few, I pulled over for some water Doritos white chocolate, oatmeal cookies and Doritos umm food!

I pedaled hard up those hills some all the way in first gear!

Tired and hungry I decided to stop for the day at this little seaside town, and checked in to the only open hotel the room i picked was a standard more on the room later pictures and all.

For dinner I walked the beach but didn't find a restaurant I liked so I went back to the hotel where I'm the only guest and ordered a beer a large plate of pasta a burger and fries! Um good!

Tomorrow will be a big push north a hundred of so kilometers so I need all the eats I can find to fuel me.

I probably won't checking to a hotel for another week maybe more so I'll blog but won't publish unless I put data on my phone... Until then.

Good night

Santiago from my Nikon's point of view

Here are a few shots taken from the hill right across the street from the hotel where I stayed!

A typical stantiago scene dogs everywhere!

A busy fish market

On the road!

After having regrouped at the Boston hotel it became apparent that I desperately needed an iPhone holder for my bike, the hold hand to teeth while turning and breaking was not working well and seeing we're I needed to go was just silly!

So I looked at my maps and points of interest and it would seems that the only place was vale del mar I was told its beautiful!? But it was a 30 km detour in the opposite direction but what the heck I'll chance it.

Okay so the beach front was a bit like a little Monaco riches everywhere and busy with construction.
I headed for the mall and hoped for the best, the cell phone shop don't have any but said to try the apple store, on the second floor! How was I supposed to get to the second floor with my bike, the elevator seemed like a good bet but once in it stopped at all sorts of floors except the second floor this was a bad joke! I asked in my best Spanish and was directed to another elevator but it was very small and as soon as I put the bike in there it beeped and complained would it make it... To get the door to close I had to life the bike vertically with all of the gear on board not fun.

Finally the apple store fingers crossed, at first he said no they didn't :( but then he asked for what iPhone and I said 4.
He said he had one! And this bike attachment had everything cadence sensors speed sensors things to monitor your health etc, and only 50.000 pesos what a deal! I asked if they had an iPad photo card reader and they did I should of waited for this place they have everything all of the other stores in Santiago didn't.

I didn't have lunch and as such I was hungry and tired so I decided to stop at a natural reserve by the water for the night it's perfect!

For the first time Mosquitos out with the eau de moustique.

After that I'll have to drink bottled water only.

First couple days on the road!

So after a confusing way out of Santiago but then again finding my way in from the airport where I attracted a lot of attention at customs and unpacking my bike, they wanted me to pay for bringing it into the country.... Eum No way! And they didn't bother to fight with me they just let me go on through, good. It was cool outside but I worked my way past the endless number of people that wanted to drive me somewhere, and three girls who asked if I lived in chile, I said no and they smiled good bye! Funny how people are.

After getting the dynamo fitted, I wasted no time and headed off, may of been a mistake as it was two pm when I headed out and the sun goes down at quarter to six, it is winter afterall I made my way out of the city, shame as I was enjoying it, only to scramble for a place to pitch my tent and it was a bit late the light was fading and I was panicking to set it up I failed to figure it out in the dim light and thus made a make do shelter as best as I could and boy did it get cold that night I woke up and was okay warm enough in my sleeping bag which is very nice but when the morning light came around at about half six I saw the damge the entire bag was covered in frost! No wonder I found it chilly!

I sleeped well enough considering my fears of wild dogs which are everywhere! Dam them! Running in pack and attacking at every opportunity very scarry and annoying.

I took the opportunity that following morning to figure out the tent which I did, its actually well thought out and takes five minutes to setup. Good, it's got a nice eating and gear area nice for when it wil and the sleeping part is not too crapped and options for ventilations packing it up is oh so simple. Overal I'm pleased with the tent sleeping mat made in Ireland and sleeping bag.

I find the whisper light international which I choose because it can run off of all sorts of different fuels from gasoline to white gas. To be a bit finicky, I'll get the hang of it, but o ce gooing it boils water quickly.

So the roads well as mentioned there is mad traffic the buses and rocket ships guided by blind men or am less systems that just aim for objects rather then find a way around.

The second day on the road was a fine mostly lone Somme mountain roads with breath taking views.
Found my way to a tucked away spot and setup camp with plenty of daylight! As to avoid a repeat of the first night the tent was setup perfectly this was going to be something else and it was a perfectly comfiest night after a struggle with dinner the stove wouldn't light, but in the end it worked thank god. I need all the calories I can get.

Right breakfast and pack up and off to another spot well not so great all the roads were highways and that is no fun if not dangerous and illegal!
A few horns hear and there but it worked out nonetheless.

The dogs are not helping and my navigation system was not working well,so I decided to call it a day regroup at a hotel, hotel Boston and look at alternative guidance systems other then my trusty Garmin for which I have only basic maps and very limited batteries, so I'll use my iPhone which I can keep juiced up. Maps downloaded I feel more confident and after a good dinner soup, pasta and salad I'll sleep tight and even get a laundry service as well as a warm shower even though I had bathed in the river today.

People I've meet along the way

2Carlos Gomez
Guia de Mountainbike

Facebook: /travellifechile

Carlos is the best! We meet by chance in one of the many bike shops on San Diego street in Santiago where I told him what the problem was and what I was doing.

He offered to help and later told me that to source a dynamo in Santiago would of been very difficult! Boy was I glad to have bought one in Toronto.

We agreed to meet up at 10 on Monday the 15th of June at his store were we started to rebuild the wheel outside in the shade.

To true the wheel he needed to use the true ing stand and once he was done it was perfect, I wanted to pay I
Him for the work and told him I was having banking issues I could not draw money, so we agreed that I would give him the extra spanner I had which was brand new as well as the original hub, confident that the son would not fail...

Once he finished we made sure everything worked and We parted ways shaking hands amicably.

This trip would not be happening without him!

--------

On the highway 5 which I should of not been but there was no other road, I came to a problem spot! The road had changed to a single lane as they were doing major works! Crap now what? Go back not an option, so I started to look for a way through. This did not look good and going on this single lane with all of those trucks suicide!
A worker approached and asked me something in what could only be worker Spanish I understood nothing :) then a nice worker lady started to be interested, she was talking a lot I was understanding little but in the end we worked it out she called in a pickup truck and they where going to take me through the road works safely, the only choice. While we waited she offered water and fruit!

The truck arrived and we  loaded the bike in the back, all three of us hoped on board and there was little all only because of my poor Spanish if not I would of asked them a million things.
Once safe they dropped me off and I thanked the man who drove and kissed the lady thank you and good bye. She had been great!

Preparations in Cork.

The mess!

And then all tucked into these bags which will go on the bike I'll take a picture of that too

Couple of days in Santiago!

What can I say I love this city! Surrounded by its magnetic mountains topped with white caps it's gorgeous!

I will included a few pics I took with my phone I guess I'll have to do so for now because I can't seem to find an iPad card reader must of been to 10 different stores but they don't carry the readers no bother I'll work around the problem and post high rez later.

Back to Santiago, it's a mixture of uncertainty all of the stores and homes are on high alert for theft police everywhere, they do not seem to be corrupt and are inclined to do their job.
People work hard here for little pay but the city is buzzing missile buses as I call them cause they drive so dam fast zoom arou d the city in dedicated kamikaze lanes which are also shared with bikes but it's a bit mutes to ride there unless you have a death wish.

There are some pretty nice bike lanes and a lot of people use them funny enough most people have really nice bikes which I did not expect good I feel better that not all the attention will be one mine.
I did have a few oh that's a nice ride! And it is, I try my best to answer in Spanish but I haven't learned it completely yet! Just glad I was paying attention in sign language class it's coming in usefull :)

Today the 15th of hue all of the stores are closed so I figured might as well do a little site seeing, I hope on the bike and just followed others around the city as a sort of free guided tour and sure enough a lot of them were going to the park so I followed and boy was it worth it! An uphill ride and voila perfect view of the city. We don't have this in Cork!

On the way up there were all kinds of people but they were all making an effort to be active which was nice to see and all very happy to be enjoying a perfectly good Sunday.

More importantly a lovely girl blew a kiss my way! Must of been the red gloves, I purred back and skilled, thinking should I stop what would I say I know three words in Spanish maybe that's enought...

Enjoyed the views and looked at the time, 17:00 time to head back shower at the hotel and get dinner. The ride back would be fun a nice downhill.
Not even 10 meters down that BAM! Bike accident this girl lost control on sand and biffed hard, so much so that two motor cycle cops showed up to help the bike was dead but she seemed okay someone help move the bike out of the way and lucky she had a helmet and joint protectors on.

The ride back was way fun big time speeds faster then the cars could handle on the windy roads and it was nice to be able to over take them for a change!

Dinner was a BK triple supper delux about 20000 calories but everyone of them counts right now, and since it's the soccer world cup might as well watch a bit of it, to if anything g improve my Spanish.

Tomorrow will be a bike maintenance day wheel rebuild and then off to finally meet my host in Santiago, so no mor hotel for now.

In bound flight to Santiago!

Landing  LeatherAfter a relentless evening that kept digging into the wee hours of the morning, driven mostly by my conciseness to leave the house as clean as possible I scrubbed every surface and discarded anything I did not need to keep. The day before Damien my cousin's husband who also happens to live in Cork had stopped by to pick up a fair number of my things, which by all account weren't so voluminous as we only needed one trip in a passat.

Still I was looking at the clock very closely as we needed to get going for the bus to Dublin airport at 5 am and it was already coming on two! Thats when I decided okay stop your exhausted get a few zzzz and then your off, you've done what you could... Packed up made the dinner cleaned recycled etc, oh and if you could only find a nice girl to help wouldn't that be better, sniffed my arm Pitts and thought no that's not the reason why they smelled okay.

So the alarm kept on complaining and I kept on hitting the snooze button then a knock on the door! Crap 5:15 already Drank coffee as quickly as I could shaved brushed my teeth, got dressed and we rushed off in my landlords van to the bus stop made it in time just!

Dublin airport and Air Canada! Arrived with more then 3 hours to get things sorted the bike and the luggage -- I was glad I did.

The airport was not ready for me my box was huge and I was the attraction of the moment.

Had to get everything wrapped in plastic then pay for the extra luggage and the bike was fully assembled so it was a big box and it wouldn't fit in the X-ray machine! The lady wanted me to open the box telling me you've got a problem if we can't get this box open, the problem was that I didn't have any tape to close it again so we found tape I showed here the bike she was happy then closed the box again and the airport then told me we needed to find a luggage handler for the bike 2 hours passed I was getting anxious and pissed off at the same time! I even applied for the position which made the lady laugh saying might as well make a buck while you wait! And wait we did, then at the last possible moment a little scrawny man showed up and my box dwarfed him, I wasn't sure how he was going to handle my bike but any was it was time at last to get on the flight to Toronto!

Everything in Toronto went okay managed to get the bus down town to pick up the son28 Dynamo which is very nice! And also very expensive, saw a little of the city which was buzzing they were getting ready for some sort of party streets were closed off and speakers out... Not sure what was going on. It was also much hotter then what I'm used to in Cork.
On the return return trip to the airport there was this English family and the little Girl said some thing that made us all smile she said this looks a lot like Canada! She must of been about three.

Time to get ready to take the flight to Santiago, I had concerns about my newly purchased gear would they allow me to take it on board? I asked the security people about my spanner and they said yes that's okay it turns out that they were more concerned about the tent  and the pegs then anything else no one had given me grief until now, but they opened my bag and had a look. We then discussed as to why I had a tent were I was going they were impressed.

The waiting room for the flight well more like the waiting floor big open spaces  leather seats and iPads free to use while you waited very nice. I also had a cheese burger and a Corinna and watch the Stanley cup finals what could be a better way to wait for a plane....

We boarded the huge 747 all 20 of us the plane is empty! So plenty of comfort and the crew is very nice.

The flight there was a night flight which meant we would arrive in the morning and considering the first class services he girls were doi g it was plesent extra blankets for those that needed it and I must of been shivering as they kept on mentioning it come breakfast.
The landing was something a bit special snow topped mountains that appeared out of no where  something g straight out of a sim city game. Then time to say good byes to the crew and get the gear, umm would it get past customs in Chilli?
I was lucky not to have to pay an entrance fee this was dependent on the passport you held and mi e was not on the list the girl stamped my passport without any questions, good!

Paris trip 9th of June

Well after a couple of really warm days in Paris and there about notably to my great uncle's place called l'Annerie or in English the Screw Up that's the name of the house which is perfect I would love to have a picnic there with someone special it's just that darn nice!

Where basically I talked to my aunts, uncles, grand mother and cousins about my coming trip they were all very interested and exited to hear about where I was going to go for the next 5 months!

A few more pics

I also put up some what of a reputation from eating so much, they were very happy that the French food was enjoyed so much by me and others, it is simply put some of the best.
Also a joy to see people carry the bag gets back home!

Day two

We sleeped terribly from the sounds of the driving rain and the thunder but our stomachs empty we were driven to get to the restaurant where even more family members where gathered.

We said our hellos and then chow time the seating arrangement was a traditional boy girl type and I picked a seat next to my cousin Sylvie which I had not seen in forever, it was a nice moment sitting with her talking about the now and remembering our childhoods.

Then we had to go had a dinner planned with my old man whom I had not seen in a number of years...
He his wife and son had moved to a new place so they dropped me off and I met up with dear old Dad, where we talked for a while and had yet again some food ( must of gain at least 3 pounds on this trip)

It was nice to see him he hasn't changed a bit :) same old Dad

He nicely Dropped me off at the train station in his silver A8 (sweet ride) and headed off to my brother's place to spend the night and say see ya latter in person.

No matter what happens I'm off to Santiago Friday but still Im worried... Na... All will be okay.

Evening with Mom and Arthur in Paris

So after a safe landing at Charles de Gaules all of the things I had brought over for my brother arrived in one piece, good I was relieved.

Then off in what was to be not one of the best trips to his place in an diesel Opel station wagon that just kept on stalling and was starting to piss off both of us literally 25 meters and stall we even pulled off to the side of the road and thought about leaving it!

But we stayed cool and persisted mostly from the want to just get there and get out of the mad Parisian Traffic, I had forgotten what a traffic jam was like after living in cork for the last three years and I don't want to again, the plush rolling hills are calling me home.

Unloaded the car and put together the bike and then tested it out with him to make sure all was okay, he was happy, he didn't need to say anything I am happy to still be his big brother after all these years look after him help him out.

Then the mother showed up and off to the store for dinner, it's warm here about 30 deg centigrade so a nice Mellon and Italian dry ham for starters sounded really nice then couscous and a bit of beef of course with greens and to finish it off ice cream, yum.

We said good night to the mom and just chatted the rest of the evening talking about the places we had seen together the fun times we have had -- the cars we drove together, I glad I made the trip I thought to my self.

Oh the storiesI'll share with him in about 6 months time!

On the way to see the family say bye for now!

Some day we will start to use street names and house numbers just makes things easier ..... To tell the taxi man where you are rather then after the 14th rock take a right turn then past the 4th tulip goe left and it's the house after the 3rd mushroom!

Still after only 45 minutes of explaining mr taxi found me and the bike and other items are checked in and on the way to you brother.

Right so a weekend in Paris saying hi and by to the family and a nice dinner with the Old Man he is the one that is making this trip possible after all!

00:15 Friday Morning

Still up getting  things ready for my trip to Paris --

My Cube is all packed up in its bag and bless it its been a good bike to me hopefully my Brother Arthur will enjoy it as much, a hand out -- poor guy someone stole his so seemed like the right thing to do rather than let it sit in a garage.

The little outing to the waterhole was okay.

Spoke to Steffen about someone -- the situation is becoming quite aggravating its starting to annoy a number of people me included.

on the lighter side of thing I picked up my 1st aid kit at the pharmacy I could just put a red cross on the panniers I have so much stuff, :)

Physical Preperation

3 years of every day ( and I mean everyday) commuting and riding through the lovely Irish countryside and weather 100 kph winds branches flying out at me and other random objects coming at me.

so that and running every other day

I would say I am in pretty good shape!

Electronics

2 smart Phone -- they're pretty dumb actually!

My trusty Nikon dslr with a few lenses.

Ipad (1st gen but still going strong, so why change it?!)

Kindle paperwhite -- pretty sweet.

.........

The plug to keep things going on the road ill keep you posted on the usability of this pedal powered electricity maker.
( Supernova The Plug III USB Power Supply )

After what some would call a bit of a gaff to install this thing, it needs to go into the steer tube and tha means removing the star nut, for that you need a drill!
So I drilled and removed the star nut and then passed the cables in the steer tube and put the new star nut in place and hamered it in position and presto a clean cable cut! shit! Back to store to get another star nut! Dam it lie I wasn't busy with another preparations!

So I made sure that this time the two stars where not over lapping and drilled out the star nut one more time passed the cable in the tube and hammered the star nut in place this time it worked!
.............

Garmin Colorado GPS -- this thing is tuff it has lasted 3 years of none stop Irish weather -- speaks for itself.
I don't have enoug batteries and it can't be recharged with USB so it will be a back up :( I like my garmin.

I'll use my iPhone loaded with maps and what not as the primary navigation source!

Things That are Pissing me off!

Had to pick up a Son 20 Dynamo in Toronto in between two flights cause poison.de could be bothered to build the bike with a dynamo as requested!!!

Come on who does this I mean jump out of an air plane in an other country to get bike parts

Still the saga continues as I am now stuck in Santiago to have my wheel rebuilt.

In my search for a store that could do this I meet Carlos Gomez a Guiana de Mountainbike who offered to rebuild the wheel special for me after I told him what I was up to meeting the fella again tomorrow to actually finish building the bike!

Fingers crossed I can find the right spokes!

Suggestions from People

Thanks Emiliano
---------------------

Nasca, you should definitely stop there and take the airplane and fly over the desert to see the lines, it's a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
the Huacas (http://www.huacasdemoche.pe/), near Trujillo, where you can also find Chan Chan, the city of mud.
The part in Ecuador just out of Peru is also quite interesting, you'll be travelling through huge "forrests" of banana trees,

Thanks Clara
----------------

But in Peru you'll be going near Arequida and that is worth seeing.

For Macchu Picchu or to at least visit some of the scared valley and heart of Inca civilization that is on the East side of the country in Cusco, closer to Bolivia but I don't see you headed that way.

On the coast in Peru we went to a really cool surf town in the North called Mancora.

In Ecuador there was also a surf town that was a bit more touristy but still a very pretty spot called Montanita.

In Columbia definitely go visit the city of Medelin- very cool vibe, arty, interesting.

In the north of Columbia we spent quite a bit of time in Cartagenia, a very cool Colonial Town but also quite touristy.

We then took a sailing boat across from Cartagenia to Panama...we had to wait around for over a week for a good sail boat to arrive but it was an amazing trip.  It was 5 days of sailing around the San Blas islands, snorkeling, stopping over to explore islands.  Initially the price does sound like quite a lot but you get all this great fresh food, and sailing around those islands was awesome.

On the coast of Panama we really enjoyed these area called Bocas del Toro...especially the boat trips you can get to these cool beaches.

For Costa Rica...definitely best to ask AL and in Guatemala one of my favourite places was on the foot of Pacaya Volcano which was amazing to climb and the town is called Antigua

So There it is more or less, it will be interesting to do a comparison afterwards -- what was planned what was done and what went completely wrong :)

The Idea is to land in Santiago and Cycle all the way up to Guatemala City.

El engranaje -- The Gear --

So as is often the custom with such a trip you get to see the gear page Zupper ;)

La bicicleta
 --------------
in the last three years for good or bad mostly good its been a good bike I never though we go through so much together but we did -- My Cube has been replaced with an appropriately titled Poison I guess its become so:-

its a custom built
 --------------------
Black on Black
Atropin-Tourer

with a -Rohloff-Gates belt drive
from my friends at http://www.poison-bikes.de/

They were very helpful in helping me prepare the bicicleta so I can only recommend them to anyone who asks.

the center piece of attention is the Rohloff drive train with the gates belt drive

http://www.rohloff.de/en/products/speedhub/

we had our doubts when building the bike if the belt was the best choice still to be determined when things get tuff out there -- but we are pretty sure that the Rohloff will not fail.
